Johnson & Johnson wins xarelto lawsuit
Johnson & Johnson Notches Victory in Xarelto Case
June 13, 2017
In a decision that could set a troublesome precedent for people whose health has been compromised by Big Pharma, a New Orleans jury has found that drug giants AG Bayer and Johnson & Johnson are not liable for the health problems suffered by thousands of people who took the blood-thinner Xarelto.
The case concerned the 2015 death of a woman named Sharyn Orr, who, her family contended, had been inadequately warned of the health risks associated with taking Xarelto. As a “bellwether trial,” the decision could set a legal precedent.
The drug companies had won a similar bellwether trial in May. Some 18,000 Xarelto lawsuits are currently pending against Johnson & Johnson and AG Bayer.
Lawyers for the plaintiff vowed to continue their fight.
Xarelto has been prescribed in large numbers since 2011 for the treatment and control of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms. Thousands of plaintiffs have alleged that the drug’s manufacturers were aware that Xarelto could cause uncontrollable bleeding, but that Johnson & Johnson and AG Bayer withheld that crucial information from patients and their doctors.
