Drug price probe into several major drugmakers
Congress Launch Drug-Price Probe
August 21, 2017
U.S. House of Representatives Democrats Elijah Cummings (Maryland) and Peter Welch (Vermont) have launched an investigation into the pricing of multiple sclerosis drugs manufactured by several major drugmakers, including Bayer, Novartis, Teva, and Sanofi.
Data show that several of the most-prescribed MS drugs have increased in price by as much as 600, 800, and even 1000 percent over periods of a few years.
As an example, the Representatives’ report cited Bayer’s Betaseron, which, since its 1993 approval, has allegedly risen in price by 691 percent, to reach an annual cost of about $91,000.
Spokespeople for each of the companies named in the probe have expressed a willingness to cooperate with the Congresspeople.
Drug price-hikes have been in the news recently, largely in connection with “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, who gained notoriety for raising steeply the price of a potentially life-saving antiparasitic drug by more than 5000 percent.
