IVC FILTER LAWSUITS
The LawFirm.com focuses on major personal injury after an automobile accident, defective medical products (such as metal on metal hips), and products liability (such as talcum powder, regular use of which we believe can lead to ovarian cancer). One of the defective medical products we are pursuing are inferior vena cava (IVC) filters. Also known as a blood clot filter, this is a medical device made of wire that looks like a spider. IVC filters are medical devices designed to prevent blood clots like pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The idea is that the filter will stop blood clots from traveling throughout the body and prevent strokes. These devices are intended to serve as an alternative to blood thinners and anticoagulant medications.
Hundreds of thousands of Americans may have these devices inside of their bodies. The filters are designed to be placed for a limited period of time; however, many are implanted in emergency rooms and the surgeons will not see their patients again, increasing the likelihood that an IVC filter will remain in place for too long.
The FDA issued a warning on August 9, 2010 against leaving IVC filters in for extended periods of time. The reason for this warning is because the likelihood of splintering increases the longer the device remains in the body. Additionally, the filters can only be removed successfully in about half of cases. Many people have suffered through multiple surgeries to correct problems with this device.
Many patients have suffered injury or even death. Known complications may include:
“Cardiac tamponade”, a condition where fluid builds up in the space around the heart and interferes with heart function; Irremovable IVC filter;
Deep Vein Thrombosis; Filter fracture (pieces can injure the heart, lungs, or inferior vena cava);
Internal bleeding; Perforation, puncture, and other serious damage to the inferior vena cava wall and/or the heart or lungs;
Hematoma or nerve injury at the puncture site; Constant, severe pain in the heart, chest, or elsewhere in the body;
Pulmonary embolus (a blockage of an artery in the lungs);
Respiratory distress (difficulty breathing); Infection;
Device migration (device may become ineffective, or erode into the body); Device erosion and Blood clots may clog the filter, slowing blood flow into the lungs.
If you have suffered from health problems related to an IVC filter, you could be entitled to compensation. As always, the attorneys at TheLawFirm.com offer a free and confidential review of your case.
