Zofran and Birth Defects - Important Consumer Information

Call us now if you took Zofran during pregnancy and your child was born with:

Heart Defect - Atrial Septal Defect (ASD):
An atrial septal defect is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that divides the upper chambers of the heart (atria). A hole can vary in size and may close on its own or may require surgery. An atrial septal defect is one type of congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth. More Info

Heart Defect - Ventrical Septal Defect (VSD - Common referred to as "Hole in the Heart"):
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart. This wall also is called the ventricular septum. A ventricular septal defect happens during pregnancy if the wall that forms between the two ventricles does not fully develop, leaving a hole. A ventricular septal defect is one type of congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth. More Info

Cleft Palate:

The roof of the mouth (palate) is formed between the sixth and ninth weeks of pregnancy. A cleft palate happens if the tissue that makes up the roof of the mouth does not join together completely during pregnancy.  For some babies, both the front and back parts of the palate are open. For other babies, only part of the palate is open. More Info

Cleft Lip:
For some reason, cleft lips are more common on the left, but may also be bilateral. Cleft lips can even involve the alveolar margin, which is one of the two jaw ridges either on the roof of the mouth just above the upper teeth, or on the bottom of the mouth behind the lower teeth. More Info

Kidney Malformation:
An atrial septal defect is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that divides the upper chambers of the heart (atria). A hole can vary in size and may close on its own or may require surgery. An atrial septal defect is one type of congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth. More Info

Club Foot:
Clubfoot, also called congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), is a congenital deformity involving one foot or both. The affected foot appears to have been rotated internally at the ankle. Without treatment, people with club feet often appear to walk on their ankles or on the sides of their feet. More Info

Zofran has been on the market for more than 20 years, but unfortunately the drug was never adequately tested, or FDA approved, for use by pregnant mothers.  The drug company recently paid a massive fine to settle charges that it encouraged doctors to prescribe the drug to pregnant women.
